Ready to apply for your marriage license but don’t know where to start?

Here’s your guide:

Planning your wedding is exciting, but before you can say "I do," you'll need one important document: your marriage license!! If you're getting married in North Carolina, the process is super easy when you know what to expect. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to obtain your marriage license.

Step 1: Apply for Your Marriage License

Couples getting married in North Carolina can apply for a marriage license through any county’s Register of Deeds starting at 60 days out from their wedding day! In many counties (including Mecklenburg County), you can apply online to save time!

Step 2: Visit the Register of Deeds Office Together

Both applicants must appear together in person to finalize the application. Don’t forget to bring the following:

  • A valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, or state-issued ID)

  • Your Social Security Card (or tax statements)

  • Payment for the marriage license fee (check the county website for the current fee and accepted payment methods)

If either person has been previously married, you should know the date your previous marriage ended. In most cases, you will not need to bring divorce paperwork or a death certificate unless specifically requested.

You'll receive your marriage license that same day. North Carolina does not have a waiting period, so you can get married immediately after receiving your license.

Your marriage license is valid for 60 days from the date it is issued. Be sure to schedule your ceremony within that timeframe.

Step 3: Wedding Day!

On your wedding day, your officiant, as well as two witnesses, are going to sign the license and make your marriage official!! Don’t forget to make sure your photographer is around to capture some photos!

Most professional officiants will return the signed license to the Register of Deeds for you! If having a friend or family member officiate, don’t forget to return the license within 10 days!

Step 4: Order Certified Copies

Once your marriage has been officially recorded, you may want to order certified copies of your marriage certificate. These are often needed if you're changing your name, updating insurance policies, or handling other legal documents.

Certified copies can be requested through the Mecklenburg County Register of Deeds and are $10 each.
